Weir 6th Grade Visits Five Mile Camp
October 19, 2009
On October 7, 2009 the 6th grade students of Weir Junior High visited Five Mile Camp located in Quapaw, Oklahoma. The reason for the trip was to kick off the If I Had A Hammer curriculum that Mr. Hull will soon start with his 6th grade math class. The curriculum kicks off with the students building a 12’ x 8’ house. Throughout the camp and curriculum they will find themselves taking everyday tasks, basic construction duties, and mixing it with math skills. This is the second year that he has attended this camp and done the curriculum with his students. The program covers some of the state math standards as well as other life skills needed. Mr. Hull is always looking for new material to try in class and he truly believes that this program will be exciting, but most importantly, will continue to put a profound twist on the way children learn mathematics. As a part of the visit at Five Mile Camp the students had the opportunity to see what the camp just had to offer. Before the build and lunch each student was able to go on a horseback ride, carriage ride, and explore the grounds. Some of Mr. Hull's students had never been on a horse before, so it was quite the experience for them. At the end of the day when the students left Five Mile Camp, they left with an appreciation of nature, construction, and the importance of teamwork. Mr. Hull would like to thank Perry Wilson for the curriculum and the staff of Five Mile Camp for their hospitality and great food!
