McCune Fouth Graders Celebrate Kansas Day!

by Joyce Fox

The McCune Fourth Grade celebrated Kansas Day with a home project of building a replica of a Homestead in the 1800s.  They could choose from a log house; a sod house; a dugout or board house.  They had to include some kind of water source like a well, stream, etc.  Many of the students chose to add more extra details to enhance their houses.  The students had both enjoyable and not so enjoyable details about the experience.  Caitlin Low liked making the chimney on her house because it was fun putting all the little rocks together.  Pouring the toothpaste for water was the fun part for Sydney Nippoldt.  Ryan Gath liked building his fence he thought it was cool gluing on all the rocks, and Ellis Lute liked going outside in the mud to find the sticks to build his and house and then playing with mud to fill in the holes once it was built.   Each student gave a presentation to the class about why they chose their type of house and some advantages and disadvantages of their choice.  The students also pointed out the extra details they added.  Alaina Martinie tried to make her house resemble her great-grandma Opal’s house the she use to talk about.  Charlie Basoco showed how he fixed his house so that the roof came off to look inside his house, and Carrissa Peacock had a cow in the water because it was a hot day, (really that was the only place she could get it to stay glued).

The students’ and their families put a lot of time and effort into the houses.   Many parents stated it was hard to get started, but then it was hard to stop adding all the little details.
