1st Grade Has Been Very Busy

Missy Johnson

January marked Kansas’ 151st birthday. The first grade students learned “Home on the Range” and studied Kansas facts. They did a play about sunflowers with the Kindergarten class. Each student made a sunflower mask, learned a Kansas fact and made a picture to go with the fact. They put on the play before the Spelling Bee. Later that day they each decorated a sunflower cookie.

February was a very busy month. We celebrated the 100th day of school. Each student brought 100 small items to display in the classroom. Everything we did that day revolved around 100. For Abraham Lincoln’s birthday we made masks and recited a poem. For our first president’s birthday we made cherry crisp.

In March we read a story in our reader called “Friends Forever”. The class worked together to make their version of the story. We brainstormed ideas and then took photographs to illustrate their ideas and then wrote the story to go along with their ideas and pictures. They really enjoyed this project. To go along with the lesson on feelings we also implemented technology. Each group was given a feeling word and they had to decide how they would show that feeling as I took the picture and after that we did a writing lesson. We also attended Greenbush with the Kindergarten and 2nd grade. At Greenbush we learned about Rainforests and fossils.
