Southeast High School: Activities: Music

SHS Music Students Receive Honors

by Danica Gibson

On Saturday, November 7, Southeast High School music students traveled to Chanute to audition for the Southeast District Honor Band and Choir.

Rachael Holden, soprano, was selected for the District Honor Choir. Thomas Porter, flute, Jennifer Dey, flute, Tim Holden, clarinet, and Lori Henderson, clarinet, were selected for the District Honor Band.

Music students from all the schools in the Southeast District of Kansas compete for places in the district honor groups for choir, band, and orchestra. In an audition, students must perform two scales, three excerpts of prepared music, and sight reading.

90 students were selected for the District Honor Band. Over 20 schools are only represented by one student in the 2009 District Honor Band. Southeast High School exceeded that mark with four students.

Students who are selected for one of the honor groups and who are sophomores or older, are eligible to audition for the State Honor Band and Choir. In January, Thomas Porter, Jennifer Dey, and Tim Holden will travel to Salina to audition for the State Honor Band.

The District Honor Band and Choir performances will take place at Labette County High School in Altamont, on Saturday, December 5, at 4:30 pm.
